OLD NEWS : 05.06.2008 We've been back in the studio again with Dr. Pavao. It's good to be there, thinking in terms of tape and allowing the new songs to breathe a bit. And speaking of Nigel, we're looking forward to playing with his band, Last of the Blacksmiths at the Cafe DuNord later this month for their CD release show. It's an amazing record - beautiful songs and wonderful sounds. Iit's been in the CD player continually, alongside Dame Satan's new record, which is also a lovely gem. Anyway, hope to see you soon. Stop in for more updates and hopefully a new web design very soon. Cheers, Chris
01.07.2008 Hope the new year is treating everyone well. We've been doing the holiday thing - seeing friends, family, the interiors of Boeings, and shovelling snow at home. Stickeen has been getting plenty of airplay on college radio throughout the US, so please feel free to call your local college station and request your favorite song from Stickeen. More reviews of Stickeen are available for viewing: - Kris, Chris, Ryan, and Dave
10/31/2007 - All Hallows Eve Words have been spoken. About Stickeen, that is. Here's a few reviews to whet the appetite. There are also a few SHOWS coming up here and there. And finally, watch Tanner Zelinsky skate to the Yellowpine Blues. - El Capitan
08/28/07/07 - And will the summer end? There are shows to be played in both the Northwest and South California areas. That will happen when the leaves begin to change and the rain returns, delivering much needed water to friends that need to photosynthesize. Stickeen is now available for purchase. See you soon, El Capitan
6/15/07 - Stickeen available August 11th via Grass Roots Record Co. Dearest brosephs,
fine feathered friends, and objects of our affections,
5/15/07 Stickeen... -El Capitan
5/3/07 Tonight we'll be in the state capitol of California. We're meeting the Grassroots family halfway. Check it out on the SHOWS page. - El Capitan
4/12/07 We'll be at The Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco tonight, supporting The Dying Californian as they release their new album, "Coarsegold." Opening up the sounds at 9:30pm is The Minor Canon. Hope to see each and everyone of your beautifulnesses. We had a great time last week up in Nevada City with the Grassroots family. There was lots of great music to be heard, and the day turned out to be a beautiful one. But sadly, Kurt Vonnegut died today. Another wonderful writer and voice has gone away to another place. It's looks like it'll be a good day to play some old records. - El Capitan
2/22/07 - Muddy Rivers We're getting some much needed rain right now. The rivers are muddy. Chains are mandatory at altitude. It'll all make for a much better summer. Oh, and I think we'll call it "Jauja."
01/02/07 An update: Ryan has been building. He's got miles of cable to sort out. Dave has been running. For the border. And back again. He got a new (old really) Wurlitzer 140 that is burnt and sloppy but purrty and agro and it has Zappa's soul in it. It's also addicted to nicotine. Chris has been replacing speakers and burning fingers. And practicing his new 5 string. He's got a fresh sunburn too. Kris has been eating peanut butter and hiding from the sun. He reads a lot too. So here we are in the years. It's 07, and it feels good to get into something new. Time to kick old habits and start new ones. Time to make new friends and time cherish the ones we've got. And hopefully along the way we'll get to make some new music too. And as far as new music goes, it looks like our new record will be released in April, so keep your eyes peeled here for more info. There's a few shows going on locally this month, so check out the SHOWS section for more info. Our next one will be in Berkeley, CA on January 13th with the Robber Barons and Axton Kincaid. In fact, Mac Martine, pedal steeler from both outfits, had a few words to say about it: I love burritos
and tan caps. I've been a searchin'. Sometimes you
talk about Bart. Stogies, dogs,
trucks and lights --Dedicated to, and in anticipation of, January 13th, 2007.
10/24/06 Working on the new record. Working on getting it released. Riding bikes and skateboards and buses. Enjoying the fall weather. See you soon.
8/29/06 We may be hiding, but it's all for a good reason. We've got a new record in the werks, and it should be available for listening soon. Also, we're planning a few tours - one tour of the west this fall, and a springtime '07 east coast tour. There's a few new photos scattered about the website, as well as some other goodies. In the meantime, we'll be playing at the Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco on September 21st alongside Maritime and The Herms. Both are great bands, and it should be a fun time. - El Capitan
7/12/06 Still plugging away on the new album. Got all kinds of great stuff on 1/2" and 1" tape reels which we're trying to pull together. Come see us play. New shows added to places all over NorCal. - El Capitan
6/11/06 It's been a nice spring for us here in SF. We're still recording new stuff that has a trippy vibe to it, and we're pretty excited for you to hear it. We'll try to play as many of the new songs at some of the upcoming shows that we've got scheduled this summer. In the meantime, the King of the Road 2005 skate video was just released, and you can get that from the Thrasher online store. "Blue Tick" and "The Woodcutter Hymnal" are both on there, and we especially enjoy watching the overweight cops try to pull off an ollie. Check it out. - El Capitan
4/25/06 So we've got two songs from our EP, Atwater KNEC, that made their way onto a forthcoming skate video. Details soon to follow. Also, you probably noticed from the front page that we'll be at Bottom of the Hill on May 6th. We'll be playing with Richard Buckner, Doug Gillard, and Meric Long. Check out the SHOWS page for details. See ya round, Kris, Chris, Ryan, Dave, and Luty
4/06/06 - It's raining a lot here It's been hard to leave the house when it's cold and rainy all the time. But I guess we're just trying to recharge a bit for the spring. We're still polishing up on some new recordings, and you should be seeing more of us later this spring. In other news - Ryan got a cool new tape echo. Dave's addicted to buying basses and then selling em. Chris just built a tube amp, which blew up shortly thereafter. Luty dropped his cell phone in the Bay. And Branco got a full refund on a pizza dinner. - El Capitan
2/12/06 - Back in Faith So we've been back in the studio to get some sutff off our chests. We're not sure what to do with it just yet, but it's all got a good feel to it so far. More details on that to come. We've got a few East Bay shows coming up too, and a tour of the Southwest on the horizon for this summer. - El Capitan

Lesser Lights and Dame Satan will be there with their rocksticks. Hope to see you there. -Kris, Chris, Ryan, Dave, and Luty
01/07/06 - Steamed Hams Friday night featured an El Cap homecoming in Oaktown. The boys laughed, cried, then howled at the moon. Dogs licked Dave's face. We got toasty and traced a picture. Scott came over for pancakes. Hope you like it.
p.s.: NY's resolution = rule the planet with hypnotic grooves. See you on the 12th at 12 Galaxies. Easy to remember, right? - El Capitan
12/4/05 - The End is Nigh 2005 is almost over. But we're fitting in one more show on December 15th at the Make Out Room in San Francisco. Two great bands are on the bill with us - This Union Standard and the John Francis. Check out the SHOWS page for details. More reviews for "What Ails You" are on the bio page too. Thanks for stopping by. We'll see you at the next show. -El Capitan
11/15/05 - Miles of Music We had a great weekend of playing music with so many great bands. Many thanks to all who came out for the release show, and many thanks to Last of the Blacksmiths and Matt Bauer. If you missed the release show, "What Ails You" is now available exclusively online through Miles of Music. Check out the MUSIC page for more details. We'll see you at the next show in December, and keep your ears peeled for a local in-store performance at one of our favorite record stores. - Kris, Chris, Ryan, Dave, and Bill
11/3/05 - "Lebowski be damned" We've got some new press available on the BIO page. Also, we've got two shows coming up. We'll be playing November 11th in Santa Cruz, and November 12th (CD release show) at the Hotel Utah in San Francisco. Check out the SHOWS page for more details. - El Capitan
10/1/05 - It's called, "What Ails You"
We're not sure if it's a question or an answer, but it's our new album. It's been mixed, remixed, mastered, and remastered, to assure the ultimate listening experience. And it will be released at our CD release party on November 12th at the Hotel Utah Saloon in San Francisco. (If you're the travelling type, we're going to have it available on November 11th as well in Santa Cruz.) So that's the deal. We're playing Los Angeles this coming week with Nik Freitas and Shadow and Dust. Check out the SHOWS page for more details on all the upcoming gigs. - El Capitan
9/22/05 - Quick update So here's the quick brief on all things El Cap. We'll be in LA on October 6th. The album is done - It'll be released on November 12th at the Hotel Utah Saloon in San Fran. That's it for now - I gotta go walk the dogs. We'll see you soon. -Kris, Chris, Ryan, Dave, and Bill
9/14/05 - Show tonight - Rickshaw Stop We'll be settin up the amps tonight at this place called the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. It's apparently got a "bicycle" vibe to it, so it should be pretty cool. We'll be playing alongside Phosphorescent and Dominic East from Our Lady of the Highway. It's an all ages show, so bring the kids along too. Dave's gonna play shirtless. Oh yeah, and we posted some lyrics from Atwater KNEC. If you'd like to check them out, they'll be linked from the Music page. - El Capitan
8/22/05 - Consonance lesson of the day - Miles of Music, only minutes away in the Mission So we just received a last minute invitation to play at 12 Galaxies tomorrow night (Tuesday), which is located in the Misson district of San Francisco. We'll be playing with Broken Horse (including members of Tarnation), along with Farma, who we've been looking forward to playing with for quite some time. Also,
The good folks at milesofmusic.com
picked up Atwater "Dubbed 'backwood savants' by Performer Magazine, San Francisco’s El Capitan embrace a downtrodden folk-rock feel that’s equal parts Appalachian and rock. 'The Woodcutter Hymnal' is an ominously dark, prosaic waltz that opens this 7 track mini-LP. And while Atwater KNEC clocks in at under a half hour, the journey feels both brief and eternal all at once. A rift of timelessness opens amidst the relaxed performances and the electric rural vibe. Shifting between, and intermeshing, the traditional instrumentation of fiddle, acoustic guitar and banjo with the tools of lo-fi indie rock, El Capitan forge a sound that might be described at times as Slow Depression. One tune though, 'Blue Tick', almost has a perky pop-ala-Cure feel to it. But then it’s hard to imagine in coarse voiced singer Ryan Henry a little Robert Smith that might have survived the Black Mtn. Hills." See you tomorrow night. - El Capitan
8/5/05 - "Backwood Savants" Here's a review from Performer Magazine on our recent appearance at the Mission Creek Music Festival: "Backwoods savants El Capitan closed the show with a satisfying ramble through the bogs and briars of their musical versatility, meandering from hoarse, guitar-driven blues to delicate vocal harmonies, and dredging up plenty of fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, and other pioneer instruments along the way." We'll be at the Hotel Utah Saloon on Tuesday August 9th with our friends in River of Rust. Want of Wit will also be playing on the bill. And the good news is that our new CD is finally complete. It will be available for mass consumption by the end of the summer - Just in time for autumn-time apple cider and fires in the woodstove. In the meantime, some of us are going camping this weekend. Others are headed to the ocean. The dogs will all be there. We'll tell you all about it on Tuesday when we see you at the Hotel Utah. -El Capitan
7/27/05 - East Bay So we had a blast playing our first show with new multi-intstrumentalist/guru Bill Luty. We can't say enough good things about him, so we'll let the music speak for itself. If you missed it, we're playing this Sunday afternoon at the Ivy Room in North Berkeley/Albany. It's a BBQ show, and we're playing with a great band - Winfred E Eye. We'll also be playing with The Scraps. See you there. - El Capitan
7/11/05 - What's going on? Well, at the moment, we're putting the final touches on our full-length, which is still currently untitled. We're also keeping ourselves busy and working on a bunch of new songs, which we're planning on recording later this summer. Overall, there's a new vibe happening in El Capitan right now, and we're pretty stoked about it. Change is sometimes difficult, but it's also good. We'll fill you in on the details soon. In the meantime, our next show will be on July 20th at the Make Out Room in San Francisco. - El Capitan
5/31/05 - Mission Creek So our mini-tour went great. We had a great time playing with our friends, and we hope you got to come out and see us play. We'll have pictures posted soon. Also, we'll be headlining the Mission Creek Music Festival on June 6th at the Make Out Room in San Francisco. We'll see you there. Here's what the San Francisco Bay Guardian has to say about it: "I
never knew what a cord of wood was until El Capitan - El Capitan
5/23/05 - Quick update The radio show up in Davis went great. Thanks to Cornelius for letting us take over his studio for the morning. If you care to check it out, our performance, along with Last of the Blacksmiths' performance, is available online in the archives section on KDVS.org. For our friends in Portland, we'll see you later this week. -El Capitan
5/17/05 - "Just can't wait to git on that road a-geen" Ok, so we're hitting the road - kind of. Anyway, we'll be heading up to the Pacific NW next week to play some shows with our SF friends Last of the Blacksmiths, and our Portland friends Hillstomp. So if you're in the neighborhood, stop by and we'll raise our glasses together in celebration. And if you're the reclusive type (and happen to live near Sacramento), then tune yer radio to 90.3 FM KDVS for the Cool as Folk radio show. We'll be on at 11:00AM to play our smash hits. Oh, and we just finished our first full length album, which will be available for purchase later this summer. We'll keep you posted. If you're the curious type, then there's a few songs available for download on the MUSIC page. Later, El Capitan
4/4/05 - Set yer clocks forward So we spent this past weekend at House of Faith Studios in Oakland to record more stuff. Right now, we've got about a dozen or so songs that are awaiting final mixing and mastering, so we're hoping to have those out on a full-length cd very soon. To give you a hint of what it might sound like, the following sonics have made their way on to Ampex 1" tape: sandpaper, 6 string thunderbooms, a vampire killer, wandering acoustic melodies, a 70 year-old mandolin (thanks Nathan), a vibrato-liscious rotating Leslie and B3 to match, a fidgety Echoplex, a fiddle, and a beautiful low end wallop that Sir Paul himself would certainly approve of. The Pacific NW tour is still being finalized, and we'll have those dates up on the site soon. Hopefully, we'll have some photos from this most recent studio session posted soon as well. Oh, and we'll be playing stripped-down set at Club Waziema for the City Sessions showcase on April 12. They serve great Ethiopian food there, so come on down on for some good grub and good music. Cheers, El Capitan
3/16/05 - St. Paddy's Day Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day, and we'll be doing our part for our Irish kinfolk by drinking large quantities of stout and listening to various Pogues and Chieftans records. Anyway, we had a great time last night playing with Loose Charm, and we'll be doing it all over again next Thursday the 24th with one of our favorite working-man bands, Hillstomp. For you workday cyber-time wasters, we're working on getting more photos on the site, and should have them available for yer viewing pleasure shortly. Cheers, El Capitan
3/7/05 - Marching with El Capitan If you happened to miss us at the Hemlock last Friday, we'll be playing 12 Galaxies in San Francisco on March 15th. It's a great place to play, and we really like the green room there cuz they've got an Atari 2600 with some great games to play like Pitfall. Hope to see you there. Oh, and in other cool news - we've been getting some airplay on some great radio shows, including the KDVS Cool as Folk show out of Sacramento. We'll actually be playing in their studio live on May 20th, so if you're in the Sacramento area, grab yer java and tune in for some stripped-down El Capitan. Love, Kris, Chris, Ryan, Ryan, and Dave
3/1/05 - Show with Fojimoto Ok, after taking off the month of February, we'll be playing the Hemlock in San Francisco this coming Friday. We'll see you there. Cheers, El Capitan
2/21/05 - RIP RIP - Hunter S. Thompson 1937-2005
01/17/05 - It's cold Yes, it's cold. And we're ready for spring. But with all the horrible stuff going on in the world lately, we're thankful to be here. So if you've got a few extra bucks burning a hole in your pocket, go ahead and give some to your charity of choice. Why the hell not, ya know? We had a great time last week playing with Dame Satan, AM Magic, and Matt Bauer at the Cafe DuNord. We made some new friends and had a good time doing so. We can't ever seem to get enough of that place, let alone enough of Matt Bauer's new CD "Nandina." Check it out if you haven't already. We're currently in the process of booking some dates up in the Pacific NW with one of our favorite SF bands, Last of the Blacksmiths, as well as a few possible dates in SoCal this spring. Our 'bitchin van' is eager to hit the road, as are we. Oh, and we'll be at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco on January 23rd. Check out the SHOWS page for details. We'd love to see you there. Plus, since we've been drunkenly giving away our CD's and T-Shirts at the past couple of shows, you're bound to walk away with something in hand. Cheers, El Capitan
12/28/04 - See you next year Happy New Years, all. We'll see you in oh five. - Ryan, Ryan, Kris, Chris, and Dave
11/3/04 - New (free) stuff, new music, etc. We know how much you enjoy free stuff. We do too. After all, we're starving musicians. So, for now, we've got a handful of new songs available for download on the MUSIC page. Check em out and see what you think. We'll probably end up releasing them on a full length; but for now, we figured we'd let you hear them for yourself. Oh, and there's new stuff elsewhere on the site. See if you can find it. And we'll be posting some new photos shortly of our last recording session and of some recent shows. And one more thing. We're playing a show this coming Saturday with our good friends Last of the Blacksmiths, as well as Tim Bluhm (of Mother Hips fame). You should be there. Check out the SHOWS section for details. Cheers, -El Capitan
10/3/04 - The Leaves are Changing... Or so we hear. It might be perpetually cold and seasonless in San Francisco, but we've at least gotten reports that the leaves are beginning to turn beautiful shades of orange, red, and amber in other fine places. And speaking of change, we've got a whole bunch of jangly new change in our pockets - Like the newest member of the band, Kris. (Not to be confused with the other Chris, or the other two Ryans in the band). But anyway, Kris has recently immigrated from Providence, RI, and he's decided to come play some drums with us. We think he's damn good, and we're pretty sure you will too. In other news, we'll be heading back into the recording studio this month to lay down some more tracks, so we're pretty excited about that. And more importantly, we've got a whole bunch of shows coming up. So please check out the SHOWS page for more details, but the next one is this coming Thursday at Bottom of the Hill. See ya around. -Los Capitanes
9/15/04 - ElCapitan, The Make-Out Room, injured, tonight Come hang out with our injured band tonight at the Make-Out Room. We've got one broken toe, one wisdom tooth removed w/ no anesthesia less than 48-hours ago, two new and unfortunate haircuts, some delusion (lots of delusion), and a musical genius who hates reggae. We'll take sympathy beer and a loud Midori sour for the reggae hater. A sorry state of affairs, but at least there'll be beautiful girls. Australian ones. And make sure you get there early, 'cause we hear from our most respected sources that Matt Bauer is very, very good on the ears... -Love, us.
8/25/04 - Back in Town So we just completed a very cool tour of the Pacific Northwest, which we totally enjoyed. More importantly, we got to meet some great people and bands along the way, including Gladhouse and ROY. Thanks to everyone that came out to all the shows - specifically, thank you to all of our gracious friends and hosts for putting up with the Capitan while we slept on your floors, drank your beer, and shared your women.. We had a blast, and look forward to getting up that way again soon. In the meantime, we've got some new goodies in the PHOTOS section, with some nice, detailed documentation of the tour. Check out the SHOWS section, cuz we'll be playing locally at Cafe Du Nord on September 5th, and there have even been some rumors floating around about a possible mini So-Cal tour later this fall with some of our good friends in a band we will not yet mention (until it is confirmed). Anyway, that's all for now, but check back often, as shit is always changing. Hope to see ya'll soon. - El Capitan
8/15/04 - Get In The Van It's
big and white and floats down the road with no regard for dividing So we leave for Portland and Seattle on Monday, August 16th. Check the SHOWS page, then do us a huge favor by calling your friends who might live in those locales and ask them to head out to the clubs when we're in town. We'll be back in SF on September 5th at the Du Nord with Darker My Love and Black Bear. So keep on keepin' on, and we'll see y'all then. Love, us
7/27/04 - Summertime, and the livin's easy... Ok, so we've been a little lax on updating the website. But we've got a handful of good excuses. Great ones, actually. For starters, a few of us are currently on vacation in some pretty cool places including Montana, Japan, AND Oakland! Secondly, we've been pulling together the final details of our next tour, which will take place mostly in the Pacific Northwest. Check out the SHOWS page for more details. And lastly, we've been practicing a handful of newer songs which we'd like you to hear. In the meantime, we've gotten some reviews on our EP from both Bluemag.com and the Copper Press. Check out the BIO page for details on those. Anyway, that's about it for now. Hope we get to see both new and familiar faces at some of the upcoming gigs. Stop by, grab a beer, and say hey. We'll be there making noise. We'll leave you with some amusing suggestions of new genres that we've been told we might fall under. I don't know about all that, but we at least thought they were funny. Thanks Brandon: Mountain
Rock
5/18/04 - They're Here No, not the martians. But your very own copy of El Capitan's "Atwater KNEC!" Follow this link directly to CDStreet to place an order. In other news, we're still working on setting up a West Coast tour, and we've got plenty of new material to keep us busy for the time being. We've also got a good number of shows lined up in the coming months, so please come out and bring your friends. We'd love to see you there. Take care folks, -El Capitan
5/14/04 - Small change in plans So unfortunately, due to some circumstances beyond our control, our CD release party will be postponed for a few weeks. (Sadly, the owner of the Goldmine Winery passed away this week. May he rest in peace). We will now be playing at the St. Charles Saloon in Columbia on June 5th. So if you're in the area, come on by and have yourself a few beers, a few laughs, and a new El Capitan EP. Otherwise, all is going well. We're currently in the process of booking a small West Coast tour in early August, so we're really looking forward to that. We'll keep you posted on any and all things El Capitan related. We'll have some links up on the site very shortly with places where you can buy the CD online, so keep checking back. See ya soon, -El Capitan
5/1/04 - Greetings Comrades: Guess
what, kids? Your very own copy of El Capitan's "Atwater
KNEC" is in a box, in a truck, heading down the I-5 to California
via Oregon right now. Maybe they just passed over the Rogue River, or
maybe they're just about to pull into Weed; we don't know exactly where
the truck's at, but we're pretty confident in the fact that - wherever
they be - what's on the inside of those boxes looks and sounds a lot like
the landscape on the outside of that truck. Hell, we wish we were making
the drive ourselves. Ain't much So
anyhow, El Capitan is going to be on a compilation put out by the fine
'zine COPPER PRESS
(you can even get it in Utah!). "Sailene" is the tune we chose,
and although you'll hear it on "Atwater KNEC," you should still
pick up a copy of Copper to hear other rad bands like Pilot To Gunner,
31 Knots, and The Cardigans(!). And make sure to check the SHOWS section
to see So that's it for now. There's some cool stuff coming up that we can't tell you about just yet, so check back early and often for the latest. And while you're at it, livin' your lives and everything, make sure you spend some time listening to THE WOODS and LAST OF THE BLACKSMITHS. Take care, y'all. -El Capitan
4/8/04: Hey friends, thanks for stopping by. Things at El Capitan Land are going pretty well these days. We've just finsihed up our first official (and forthcoming) release, which is an EP we're calling "Atwater KNEC." It was recorded by Bart Thurber at House of Faith studios, and is being released on Brick and Mortar Records. It's something I know that we're all very proud of. We hope you like it too. You can preview it by clicking on the MUSIC page, or by going here: Atwater KNEC
Keep checking back often for the offical release date. We'll have more updates to the site as well. Otherwise, we plan to have it available online and in stores by the end of April. In the meantime, come see us live and experience it for yourself. Speaking of live, we've got a few shows lined up in the Bay Area over the next few weeks. We'd love for you to join us. Please check out the SHOWS section for more details. Anyway, that's all for now. I'm not much for this stream of consciousness stuff, so I'll let the music take over from here. |
